As a business one of the things we’re constantly trying to do is to reduce the impact we have on the environment. Using less cotton is one way we can do that – cotton is a thirsty crop that uses huge amounts of water.

There’s no one answer about how much water growing cotton uses, and it’s something that will improve over time. But even with the most water saving methods it can still take 10,000 liters of water to produce a kilo of cotton.

If you’re wearing a cotton t-shirt right now I’d bet that it weighs more than 100 grams. That’s 1000 liters of water.

So we decided that we’d use much less cotton. Going forward we’ll use linen for all of our bag linings. We’ll use linen where we would have used cotton canvas.

If you’d like a bag where the only cotton used is the thread you’ll find our linen project bags here.

Where we’ll still use cotton for now is for showerproof bags that are made with duck canvas. As far as I know there isn’t a linen equivalent, but I’ll keep looking. We’ve already got rid of some plastic by sourcing metal toggles – they’re on all of the bags now.

That means that once our existing stock of duck canvas bags find new homes there won’t be cotton linings in anything we sell. As they’re being changed the existing duck canvas bags have been added to the sale shop – you can find them here.

  2. Gifts for Knitters

I know that it can be tricky picking a gift for the yarn lover on your list. Not all yarn is equal, and knowing what is going to be appreciated can be tough.

So I thought I’d offer up a few suggestions.

Project Bags are always useful. Most yarn lovers have several projects on the go at once, and having a bag for each makes it easy to pick them up and go. Our project bags are made in linen or duck canvas, and are screen printed by us and sewn by either Joy or Carol.

My second suggestion is mini skeins. These are brilliant for adding a pop of colour to larger projects and there’s enough in each bundle to make something – from fingerless mitts and socks with the smaller sets to shawls with the bigger bundles.

If you’d prefer something less woolly we have gorgeous screen printed t-shirts. (Worth knowing – if your present needs to be posted these fit into the large letter category making them easier to post)

Finally the treats and gifts section of the website is a great place to find the kind of things that you’d love to receive but might not buy from yourself – from the perfect needle gauge to a useful box of bulb pins we’ve got gifts which will be happily received.

We’re happy to help with suggestions – and if you’d prefer not to choose we can organise a gift voucher for you which can be spent on anything in the shop. Contact us, let us know what you need and we’ll do our best to make it happen.
